Timing Chain Guide
A plastic or composite track that aligns and supports the timing chain to prevent whipping and noise.
A timing chain guide is a vital structural component inside the engine that keeps the timing chain aligned and under control. Because the timing chain connects the crankshaft to the camshafts over a relatively long distance, it has a tendency to whip or vibrate as it rotates at high speeds. The timing chain guides, made of durable plastic or composite materials mounted to metal backing plates, act as tracks that the chain slides along.
These guides keep the chain running in a straight line and prevent it from jumping teeth on the sprockets. Over hundreds of thousands of miles, or due to oil starvation and heat, the plastic on the timing chain guides can become brittle and wear down, crack, or break entirely.
When a guide breaks, the timing chain becomes loose, leading to a loud rattling noise (especially at startup) and the risk of the chain jumping teeth. If the timing chain jumps, it can cause severe engine damage due to the pistons colliding with the valves.
