Timing Chain
A heavy-duty metal roller chain that synchronizes the crankshaft and camshaft rotation, opening and closing the engine's valves at precise intervals.
The timing chain (or camshaft chain) is a high-strength metal chain that synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft. This synchronization ensures that the engine's intake and exhaust valves open and close at the precise moments relative to the position of the pistons in the cylinders.
Unlike timing belts, which are made of rubber compounds and run on the outside of the engine, timing chains are constructed of steel links and operate inside the engine block. Because they are inside the engine, they are constantly lubricated by pressurized engine oil, which minimizes friction and wear. As a result, timing chains are designed to last the entire lifespan of the engine under normal operating conditions.
However, the timing chain system relies on plastic guides and hydraulic chain tensioners that use oil pressure to stay tight. If engine oil changes are neglected, dirty oil or low oil pressure can cause the tensioner or guides to fail, leading to a loose, stretched, or noisy timing chain. Symptoms of a stretched chain include a rattling noise from the front of the engine (especially on startup), engine misfires, poor performance, and check engine light codes indicating camshaft/crankshaft correlation issues (like P0016).
In an interference engine, a snapped or severely slipped timing chain can cause catastrophic internal engine damage because the pistons will strike the open valves. Regular oil changes with high-quality oil are the single best way to prevent timing chain wear and failure.
