Timing Belt

A reinforced rubber band with teeth that synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft, ensuring the engine's valves open and close at the correct times.

The timing belt (or camshaft belt) is a critical engine component that synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft. This synchronization ensures that the engine's valves open and close at the precise moments relative to the position of the pistons. It is typically made of a high-quality rubber compound reinforced with high-tensile cords (such as fiberglass or Kevlar) and features molded teeth on the inner surface.

In many modern engines, the timing belt also drives the water pump. Over time, the rubber degrades, teeth wear off, or the belt stretches due to heat and mechanical stress. Unlike many other components, a timing belt rarely shows outward signs of failure before it snaps. Because of this, vehicle manufacturers specify strict replacement intervals, usually between 60,000 and 100,000 miles.

If a timing belt breaks in an "interference engine," the pistons will continue to move up and down while the valves stop in a fixed position. This results in the pistons violently striking the open valves, causing catastrophic engine damage, including bent valves, damaged pistons, and potentially a ruined cylinder head or engine block. In a "non-interference engine," the engine will simply stall, but no major internal mechanical damage will occur.

When replacing a timing belt, mechanics highly recommend replacing the tensioner, idler pulleys, and the water pump at the same time. Since the labor required to access these components is nearly identical, combining these services saves significant repair costs in the long run.
