Steering Rack Boot

A flexible rubber or plastic bellows that covers the ends of the steering rack to protect the inner tie rods and rack seals.

A steering rack boot, also known as a rack and pinion bellows, is a protective rubber or plastic sleeve shaped like an accordion. It is clamped over the ends of the steering rack housing where the inner tie rods emerge. Its primary purpose is to protect the polished metal shaft of the steering rack and the internal hydraulic seals from road dirt, water, salt, and debris.

As the driver steers, the boot compresses and stretches to follow the movement of the steering linkage. Over time, the rubber or plastic can dry rot, crack, or tear due to age and exposure.

A torn rack boot is a serious concern; it allows dirt and moisture to build up on the steering rack shaft, which will wear away the hydraulic seals and lead to power steering fluid leaks, eventually requiring replacement of the entire steering rack assembly.
