Steering Rack and Pinion
The primary steering mechanism in modern vehicles that converts the rotational movement of the steering wheel into linear motion to turn the wheels.
Rack and pinion steering is the standard steering system used in most modern passenger cars and SUVs. It consists of a pinion gear connected to the steering column that meshes with a flat, toothed bar (the rack). When the driver turns the steering wheel, the pinion rotates, sliding the rack left or right.
Tie rods connected to the ends of the rack then push or pull the steering knuckles to pivot the front wheels. In power steering systems, hydraulic fluid or an electronic motor assists this lateral movement, making steering light, responsive, and effortless.
Wear in the rack and pinion can lead to loose steering, steering fluid leaks, clunking sounds over bumps, and uneven tire wear. Regular steering system inspections help detect wear before it compromises vehicle safety.
