Power Steering Cooler
A small auxiliary radiator that cools power steering fluid to prevent system overheating and seal damage.
A power steering cooler is a heat exchanger (similar to a small radiator) designed to dissipate heat from the power steering fluid. As the power steering pump pressurized fluid to assist with steering, the fluid absorbs significant heat, especially during low-speed maneuvering or heavy towing.
If the power steering fluid becomes too hot, it will break down, lose its lubricating properties, and damage the rubber seals inside the steering rack and pump. The cooler, usually mounted in front of the vehicle radiator to catch airflow, routes the hot return fluid through metal tubes and cooling fins to lower its temperature.
Power steering coolers are common in trucks, SUVs, and heavy-duty vehicles. Leaks can develop in the cooler's metal tubes or hose connections, leading to low fluid levels, whining noises from the pump, and stiff steering. Replacing a damaged cooler and flushing the fluid restores system safety.
