Exhaust Hanger
A heavy rubber loop or bracket that suspends the exhaust system from the vehicle frame while absorbing vibrations.
An exhaust hanger is a heavy-duty rubber loop or metal-and-rubber bracket used to suspend the exhaust pipes, catalytic converter, and muffler from the underside of the vehicle. Because the exhaust system gets extremely hot and moves as the engine vibrates, it cannot be bolted directly to the metal frame of the vehicle. The rubber exhaust hangers support the weight of the exhaust system while allowing it to flex and sway.
They also isolate the vehicle cabin from the noise and vibrations of the exhaust. Over time, the rubber in exhaust hangers can dry rot, stretch, or tear due to heat, road salt, and ozone exposure. A broken exhaust hanger will cause the exhaust system to sag, rattle against the chassis, or put extra stress on the exhaust manifold and flex pipes, potentially leading to exhaust leaks.
