Tailpipe
The final rear section of the exhaust pipe that safely vents treated exhaust gases away from the vehicle.
The tailpipe is the final visible section of a vehicle's exhaust system. It extends from the outlet of the muffler and routes the exhaust gases out past the rear bumper or side of the vehicle.
The primary safety function of the tailpipe is to direct toxic combustion gases (including carbon monoxide) away from the underside of the vehicle. If the gases were released under the car, they could seep into the cabin through floor pans or trunk seals, creating a hazard for passengers.
Tailpipes are often finished with polished steel or chrome tips for aesthetic appeal. Because the tailpipe is located at the back of the car, it is exposed to road spray, dirt, and mechanical damage from road debris or low clearances.
If a tailpipe is bent, crimped, or rusted through, it can restrict exhaust flow (creating backpressure that reduces engine performance) or vent gases under the cabin. Replacing a damaged tailpipe is a standard exhaust shop service.
