Adaptive control is an advanced computer strategy where a system changes its programming rules in real-time to adapt to wear and tear. Instead of using rigid settings, the vehicle's computer monitors sensor feedback and adjusts its commands. This keeps the car running smoothly, even as parts age and wear down over thousands of miles.
A prime example is the engine's fuel trim control. As fuel injectors get dirty, they spray slightly less fuel. The engine computer detects this lean condition via the oxygen sensors and adapts by increasing the injector opening times. This real-time adjustment keeps the engine running at its peak efficiency, avoiding check engine lights.
Modern transmissions also use adaptive control. The computer tracks how many milliseconds it takes for clutches to engage during a shift. As the clutch plates wear thin, the computer adjusts the hydraulic shift pressures to prevent slipping. This ensures shifts remain crisp and smooth throughout the gearbox's life.
