Accuracy is how close a measurement is to the actual physical value. In mechanic shops, accuracy can mean the difference between a smooth-running engine and a blown block. When torqueing cylinder head bolts, using an accurate torque wrench ensures the gasket seals tight. If the tool is off by ten percent, the head can warp, letting coolant leak into the combustion chambers.
Diagnostics also rely on accurate sensor readings. The engine computer needs exact data on air temperature, fuel pressure, and oxygen levels to set the correct air-fuel mixture. A sensor that reads slightly off will cause the engine to run lean or rich, reducing fuel mileage and wearing out the catalytic converter.
Maintaining tool accuracy requires regular calibration. Quality shops send their micrometer sets and torque wrenches to calibration labs once a year. This check ensures that a measurement of one-thousandth of an inch is correct, preventing assembly errors during engine rebuilds.
