ABS Sensor Shield

A protective metal plate or cover that guards the wheel speed sensor from brake heat and road debris.

The ABS sensor shield guards the wheel sensor against road debris. Stones thrown by the tires can crack the plastic sensor housing. The shield also blocks heat radiating from the brake rotor. Without this protection, the sensor would overheat and fail during heavy braking.

These shields are made of thin stamped steel or aluminum. They can rust and rust-jack, bending until they rub against the tone ring. If you hear a high-pitched scraping noise from the wheel, check the shield.

Frequently Asked Questions

To protect the delicate plastic sensor body from road gravel and the extreme heat generated by the nearby brake rotor.
Yes, if the shield bends, it can rub against the spinning wheel hub or rotor, creating a constant scraping sound.
If the shield is rusted through, it should be replaced to prevent road debris from knocking out the ABS sensor.
