ABS Sensor Magnetic Tip

The magnetized end of a wheel speed sensor that reads the slots of a tone ring to measure wheel rotation.

The ABS sensor magnetic tip sits close to the spinning tone ring. As the metal teeth of the ring pass the magnet, they change its magnetic field. The sensor translates this change into an electrical signal for the ABS computer. This allows the computer to know how fast the wheel is turning.

Because the tip is magnetic, it attracts metal dust from wear on the brake rotors. This buildup blocks the magnetic field, distorting the speed signal. Cleaning the magnetic tip with a cloth can fix speed sensor errors.

Frequently Asked Questions

The sensor tip is a magnet. It naturally attracts fine metallic dust created when your semi-metallic brake pads wear down.
Wipe it clean with a soft cloth. Do not use metal scrapers or harsh solvents that could damage the plastic coating.
A cracked tip will leak moisture inside the sensor coil, shorting it out. The sensor must be replaced.
