ABS Modulator Pump Motor

The electric motor that drives the internal pump to return brake fluid to the master cylinder during ABS cycling.

The ABS modulator pump motor runs only when the ABS is active. When the system dumps pressure to prevent a skid, the fluid flows into accumulators. The pump motor then runs to push this fluid back against the high pressure of the master cylinder. This keeps the brake pedal from sinking to the floor.

If this motor burns out, the ABS cannot recycle fluid. The system will disable itself and turn on the warning light. You can test the motor by triggering it with a bi-directional scan tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

It runs to pump brake fluid back to the master cylinder after the ABS valves release pressure, maintaining pedal height.
Stuck solenoid valves can cause the motor to run continuously until it overheats and fails. Moisture in the fluid can also seize the pump.
On some models, the motor unbolts from the hydraulic block. On others, you must replace the entire modulator assembly.
