ABS Modulator Accumulator

A small chamber that temporarily stores high-pressure brake fluid during the pressure-release phase of ABS operation.

The ABS modulator accumulator holds fluid when the system releases brake pressure. When the wheel speed sensor detects a slide, the modulator opens a valve. Fluid rushes into the accumulator to drop pressure at the caliper instantly. Then, the ABS pump moves this fluid back to the master cylinder reservoir.

Accumulators use a diaphragm and nitrogen gas chamber to cushion the fluid. If the diaphragm ruptures, the accumulator fills with fluid and stops working. This makes the ABS pedal pulse feel harsh or delayed.

Frequently Asked Questions

It provides a temporary place for brake fluid to go when the ABS system needs to release pressure from a locking wheel.
A hard brake pedal, the ABS pump running constantly, or a delay in brake release after stopping.
Yes. It stores fluid at high pressures (up to 2,000 PSI). You must discharge the system pressure before removing it.
