Wire Brush

A hand tool with stiff metal bristles used to clean rust, paint, corrosion, and dirt from metal parts.

Rust and road grime will ruin threads, prevent gaskets from sealing, and block electrical connections. A wire brush is the go-to tool for scrubbing away scale and debris before assembly. Steel bristle brushes are great for heavy rust on cast iron parts, while softer brass brushes are better for aluminum components because they won't gouge the metal. Always wear eye protection when using a wire brush, as the stiff bristles can snap off and fly into your face during vigorous scrubbing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Use brass on soft metals like aluminum, copper, or brass. Steel bristles are too hard and will scratch or wear away soft metal surfaces, which can ruin gasket seats.
Only use a soft brass brush and scrub gently. Steel brushes can damage the ceramic insulator or wear down the delicate metal electrodes.
Cheap brushes lose bristles quickly under heavy pressure. Scrub at a slight angle and let the tips of the bristles do the work instead of crushing the brush against the metal.
