Wheel Stud

A threaded steel bolt pressed through the wheel hub assembly onto which the wheel is mounted and secured with lug nuts.

Wheel studs are high-strength threaded fasteners that protrude outward from the wheel hub flange. They act as the hangers that support the weight of the wheel and tire assembly. The wheel is slipped over these studs, and lug nuts are tightened down to clamp the wheel securely against the brake rotor and hub.

Wheel studs can become damaged due to over-tightening (stretching the threads), cross-threading, or rust. If a stud breaks or strips, it must be pressed out of the hub and replaced. Driving with a broken wheel stud puts excess stress on the remaining studs, which can lead to wheel detachment.

Always ensure lug nuts are torqued to manufacturer specifications to avoid damage to the wheel studs.
