Tire rotation is the practice of systematically moving a vehicle's tires from one position to another—such as front-to-back or side-to-side—according to a specific pattern. The goal is to ensure that all four tires wear out evenly over their lifespan, maximizing safety and tire longevity.
Tires wear at different rates depending on their location on the vehicle. For example, on front-wheel-drive cars, the front tires handle steering, braking, and engine power, causing them to wear significantly faster than the rear tires. Weight distribution also plays a role, as the front of the vehicle houses the heavy engine.
Failing to rotate tires regularly leads to uneven wear patterns, such as feathering, cupping, or rapid shoulder wear. This reduces tire grip, compromises wet-weather handling, increases road noise, and forces the premature replacement of tires. Regular rotations also maintain tire warranty compliance.
Most manufacturers recommend rotating tires every 5,000 to 7,500 miles—often aligned with regular oil change intervals. The rotation pattern depends on whether the vehicle is front-wheel, rear-wheel, or all-wheel drive, and whether the tires are directional (designed to rotate in only one direction).
