Thermostat Housing Gasket

A seal placed between the engine block and the thermostat housing to prevent coolant leaks.

The thermostat housing gasket seals the cooling system cover. Since the thermostat opens and closes constantly, this housing experiences extreme temperature swings. The gasket is made of paper, rubber, or silicone, and is replaced whenever the thermostat is changed.

Corrosion on the aluminum housing surfaces will cause the gasket to leak. Clean these surfaces with a brass brush before installing the new gasket. Do not scratch the aluminum with steel scrapers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Corrosion on the aluminum housing mating surface, loose housing bolts, or dry rot of the rubber seal.
Paper gaskets benefit from a thin smear of sealant. Rubber O-ring gaskets should be installed dry or with a dab of clean coolant.
Use a plastic scraper or a brass wire brush. Avoid using steel scrapers on aluminum housings, as they scratch the metal and cause leaks.
