Sway Bar Bushing Bracket
The metal clamp that secures the sway bar bushing to the vehicle subframe or chassis.
A sway bar bushing bracket (or stabilizer bar clamp) is a U-shaped metal bracket designed to secure the rubber or polyurethane sway bar bushing to the vehicle's frame or subframe. The sway bar runs across the vehicle and rotates slightly as the suspension moves; the bushing isolates this rotation from the frame, and the bracket holds the bushing tightly in place.
These brackets are made of stamped steel or heavy cast metal and are secured by one or two mounting bolts. Because they are located underneath the vehicle, they are exposed to road salt, water, and debris, making them prone to rust and corrosion. If a mounting bolt rusts and snaps, or if the bracket cracks due to stress, the sway bar will come loose from the frame.
A loose or broken sway bar bracket will cause a loud clunking or banging noise under the floorboards when driving over bumps or cornering, as the loose bar strikes the subframe. During bushing replacements, the brackets should be cleaned of rust, and the mounting bolts should be coated with anti-seize to prevent future seizing in the subframe threads.
