Strap Wrench

A wrench consisting of a canvas or rubber strap looped through a handle, using friction to turn oil filters, pulleys, or chrome pieces without scratching the surface.

Turning polished pipes, chrome shocks, or plastic oil filter housings with metal teeth will ruin the finish. A strap wrench wraps a high-friction rubber or heavy canvas strap around the component. As you pull the handle, the strap tightens, distributing force around the entire circumference. This provides a strong grip without scratching. They are excellent for removing stubborn spin-on oil filters and holding pulleys still while you loosen the center bolt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Strap wrenches are meant for light to medium torque. Do not use them on seized suspension bolts or high-torque fasteners.
Clean any oil or grease off the part and the strap. A dusty or wet surface reduces friction, causing the strap to slide.
Yes, but hot exhaust pipes or engine parts can melt rubber straps. Let components cool down first.
Canvas straps are stronger and hold up better against sharp metal edges, while rubber straps grip smooth surfaces like plastic or glass better.
