Snap Ring Pliers
Specialized pliers with pin-shaped tips used to install and remove internal and external snap retaining rings.
Snap ring pliers, also known as retaining ring pliers, are specialized hand tools designed to install and remove snap rings (retaining rings). These rings are spring steel clips that sit in machined grooves to prevent shafts or bearings from sliding out of position. The pliers feature small, hardened pin-shaped tips that insert into the tiny holes at the ends of the snap rings.
Snap ring pliers are available in two configurations: internal (which compress the ring inward for rings inside a bore) and external (which expand the ring outward for rings on a shaft). Many modern designs feature interchangeable heads or a flipping mechanism to switch between internal and external operation. Using standard pliers or screwdrivers to remove snap rings can warp the ring or cause it to fly off under spring tension, presenting a safety hazard.
Snap rings are commonly found in transmissions, wheel bearing assemblies, CV joints, and brake calipers. If a snap ring is stretched or bent during removal, it must be replaced, as it will fail to seat securely in its groove, leading to component failure. Mechanics inspect the tips of snap ring pliers for wear and ensure they are clean to prevent the ring from slipping off during compression.
