Shock Absorber Boot

A flexible rubber or plastic sleeve that covers the shock absorber piston rod to protect it from dirt and moisture.

The shock absorber boot (or dust boot) covers the polished chrome rod of the shock. It acts as a shield against road grit, sand, and water. If dirt gets onto the rod, it will tear the internal shaft seal, causing the shock absorber to leak oil and fail.

Torn boots should be replaced promptly. While the car remains safe to drive, the exposed shock shaft will pit and rust, leading to premature oil leaks and a rough ride.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, but it exposes the shock shaft to dirt. The shock will fail much faster without the boot's protection.
Yes. You must remove the shock absorber from the vehicle, compress the spring, and slide the new boot over the shaft.
Many shock boots have a thick polyurethane bump stop built into the top. It prevents the suspension from bottoming out and damaging the chassis.
