Power Window Regulator

The mechanical assembly inside a vehicle door that guides and moves the window glass up and down.

A power window regulator is the internal door mechanism responsible for raising and lowering the side window glass. It consists of a series of metal tracks, cables, gears, and rollers that guide the window glass along its vertical path. The regulator is driven by an electric power window motor, which spins when the driver or passenger presses the window switch.

Window regulators are subject to constant friction, vibration, and tension. Over time, plastic pulley guides can crack, cables can fray and snap, or the regulator tracks can become bent or dry. This is one of the most common mechanical failures in modern vehicle doors.

Common symptoms of a bad window regulator include a window that moves very slowly, a window that is crooked or falls down inside the door, clicking or grinding noises when pressing the switch, or the window motor running but the glass not moving. Replacing a failed regulator involves removing the interior door panel to access the mounting bolts and window clamps.
