Power Steering Fluid Reservoir

A container that stores the hydraulic fluid used by the power steering pump.

The power steering fluid reservoir feeds the pump. It contains a mesh filter at the bottom to catch metal shavings. The reservoir cap usually has a small dipstick attached to check the fluid level when the engine is warm or cold.

A clogged internal mesh filter will starve the power steering pump. The pump will begin to whine and moan due to cavitation. Some vehicles require replacing the entire reservoir because the filter is built-in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Air has entered the power steering system, usually through a loose hose clamp on the suction line. Air makes the pump whine.
Some vehicles have the filter built into the reservoir. If the filter gets clogged with metal debris, you must replace the entire reservoir.
Wipe the dipstick clean, insert it into the reservoir, and check if the fluid falls between the 'hot' and 'cold' marks.
