Oil Filter Bypass Valve

A spring-loaded valve that allows engine oil to bypass a clogged filter to prevent oil starvation.

The oil filter bypass valve is a critical safety feature built into either the oil filter itself or the engine's oil filter housing. Its primary purpose is to ensure that the engine always receives oil, even if the filter element becomes completely clogged with dirt and soot, or if the oil is too thick to flow during a freezing cold start.

When the filter is clean and the oil is warm, oil flows through the filter media. However, if the filter becomes restricted, pressure builds up on the inlet side. The pressure opens the spring-loaded bypass valve, allowing unfiltered oil to flow directly to the engine bearings rather than starving the engine of lubrication.

While running unfiltered oil is not ideal and will accelerate wear over time, it is far better than oil starvation, which would destroy the engine within minutes. Regularly replacing the oil and oil filter ensures the bypass valve does not need to open.
