Mass Airflow (MAF) Sensor Cleaner
A quick-drying chemical spray used to clean dust and oil deposits from the delicate hot-wire sensor of a MAF sensor.
Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor cleaner is a specialized aerosol solvent designed to clean the delicate sensing elements inside a MAF sensor. The sensor measures the volume and density of air entering the engine, allowing the ECU to inject the correct amount of fuel. The sensing element typically consists of a tiny platinum hot-wire or film exposed to the airflow.
Over time, this hot-wire can become coated with microscopic dust, carbon, and oil vapor (especially if using oiled cotton air filters). This coating insulates the wire, causing the sensor to read low airflow. This leads to a lean fuel mixture, engine hesitation, rough idling, poor fuel economy, and trouble codes like P0171 or P0101.
Using standard cleaners like brake cleaner or carburetor cleaner is a common mistake; these chemicals contain harsh solvents that can dissolve the sensor's plastic housing or leave a residue on the hot-wire, destroying the sensor. Dedicated MAF cleaner dries instantly and leaves no residue, safely restoring sensor accuracy.
