Magnetic Drain Plug
A pan drain plug fitted with a permanent magnet to attract and capture ferrous metal particles suspended in the engine oil or gear fluid.
A magnetic drain plug is a replacement plug installed in the oil pan, transmission pan, or differential housing that contains a powerful, heat-resistant neodymium magnet embedded in its tip. As engine oil or gear lubricant circulates through the component, it flows over the plug, allowing the magnet to capture microscopic ferrous (iron and steel) wear particles suspended in the fluid.
While oil filters trap larger debris, very fine metal particles can bypass the filter and act as an abrasive, causing accelerated wear on bearings, cylinder walls, and gears. The magnetic plug removes these particles from circulation. During routine oil or fluid changes, the plug is removed, and the collected metal paste is wiped off, providing the mechanic with a visual indicator of internal engine or gear wear.
Finding a small amount of fine metal fuzz on the plug is normal, but finding large flakes or chunks indicates a failing bearing or gear tooth, warning the technician of impending mechanical failure. The plug's threads and washer should be inspected and replaced periodically to prevent leaks.
