Splined axle shafts can rust and seize inside wheel hubs, making them difficult to remove by hand. A hub puller bolts directly onto the wheel studs using the lug nuts. A large central threaded bolt is then turned with a wrench, pushing against the center of the axle shaft. This forces the hub outward while pushing the axle inward. It prevents you from damaging the axle threads or CV joints by striking them with a hammer.
Mechanic Glossary
Hub Puller
A heavy-duty mechanical tool bolted to a wheel hub to push the axle shaft free from the splined hub assembly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, but lubricate the puller's center threads with grease first. The impact gun will turn the bolt quickly and can damage dry threads.
Tighten the center bolt, then strike the head of the bolt with a brass hammer. The shock will help break the rust bond.
Most hub pullers have slotted arms that fit various 4-lug, 5-lug, and 6-lug wheel bolt circles.
