Glow Plug Relay

An electronic switch that sends high-amperage electrical current to the engine glow plugs before starting a diesel engine.

Diesel engines use glow plugs to warm the combustion chambers. The glow plug relay controls this high-draw system. When you turn the key, the computer triggers the relay to send power to the plugs. After the engine starts, the relay cuts power to prevent the plugs from melting.

Corroded terminals or internal switch failures prevent power from reaching the plugs. Without functioning glow plugs, a diesel engine will crank endlessly in cold weather and fail to start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hard starting in cold weather, white smoke from the exhaust on start-up, and engine misfires until the engine warms up.
Usually inside the engine compartment fuse panel or mounted on the firewall near the glow plug wiring harness.
Use a test light or multimeter. Verify that power is reaching the relay input, and that power exits to the glow plug harness when the key is turned on.
