Exhaust Hanger Bracket
The metal and rubber mounts that hold the exhaust system to the vehicle underside.
An exhaust hanger bracket is a mounting assembly consisting of a metal bracket bolted to the chassis and a flexible rubber insulator ring (hanger) that supports the exhaust pipes, catalytic converters, and mufflers. It keeps the hot, heavy exhaust system suspended safely beneath the vehicle, preventing it from dragging on the road.
Because the exhaust system vibrates and moves with the engine, the hangers must be flexible to absorb these movements and prevent them from transmitting noise and vibration into the passenger cabin. The rubber insulators are designed to withstand high heat and exposure to road debris.
If a hanger breaks or the rubber splits, the exhaust system will sag, creating a rattling noise as it contacts suspension parts or dragging on the ground. A sagging exhaust also stresses the exhaust manifold and flanges, which can crack them. Mechanics inspect hangers during services and replace worn rubber insulators to prevent exhaust damage.
