Engine Oil Temperature Sensor

A sensor that monitors the temperature of the engine oil, providing data to the engine control unit to manage performance and cooling.

The engine oil temperature (EOT) sensor is a thermistor. It changes its resistance based on oil temperature. The engine computer uses this data to adjust fuel delivery and variable valve timing. It is especially important in diesel engines and turbocharged vehicles to prevent overheating.

A failed EOT sensor will throw off cold-start fuel calibration. The engine might run rich and idle poorly. On diesel engines, it can cause the glow plug system to run incorrectly, making cold starts difficult.

Frequently Asked Questions

The check engine light will turn on. The radiator fans might run at high speed constantly, and fuel economy will drop.
No. Oil takes longer to warm up than coolant. Under heavy loads, oil can get significantly hotter than coolant.
Measure resistance across the sensor terminals at different temperatures. Compare the readings to the manufacturer specifications.
