Driveshaft Universal Joint

A flexible mechanical coupling that connects driveshaft sections, allowing power transmission at varying angles.

The driveshaft universal joint (U-joint) is a cross-shaped bearing coupling. It sits at the ends of the driveshaft. As the suspension moves up and down, the U-joint allows the shaft to bend while rotating. This prevents the metal shafts from snapping under load.

A U-joint fails when the grease inside dries out. Rust forms inside the bearing cups, grinding the needle bearings to dust. A squeaking noise that matches vehicle speed is the first sign of this rust.

Frequently Asked Questions

You will hear a metallic clunk when shifting into reverse or drive. At high speeds, it will cause a heavy floorboard vibration.
No. If the U-joint breaks completely, the driveshaft will drop onto the pavement, which can flip the vehicle or destroy the transmission.
The internal needle bearings lose grease and rust. Water entering the bearing cups is the primary cause of failure.
