Drag Link
A steering linkage component that connects the steering gearbox pitman arm to the steering arm or tie rod.
A drag link is a heavy-duty steel rod used in mechanical steering systems, primarily on older vehicles, trucks, and SUVs with solid front axles (recirculating ball steering systems). The drag link connects the steering gearbox's pitman arm to the steering knuckle on the wheel, or to a center link.
As the driver turns the steering wheel and the pitman arm swings, the drag link pushes or pulls the wheel steering arm, turning the wheels. It features ball-and-socket joints at each end to allow the steering linkage to pivot as the suspension moves.
Over time, the joints on the drag link wear out and develop play. This leads to symptoms such as a loose steering wheel, steering wander, and uneven tire wear. Replacing a worn drag link and performing a wheel alignment is crucial for vehicle control.
