Differential Pinion Shaft

The shaft that transmits rotational torque from the driveshaft to the differential pinion gear.

The pinion shaft enters the front of the differential housing. It connects to the driveshaft yoke on the outside and holds the pinion gear on the inside. It is supported by two tapered roller bearings. A crush sleeve sets the tension on these bearings.

If the pinion shaft seal leaks, the bearings will run dry. The shaft will start to wobble under load. This throws off the gear pattern, leading to gear failure and axle lockups.

Frequently Asked Questions

A leak at the front of the differential where the driveshaft connects. Fluid leaks out, spraying onto the undercarriage.
Yes. You must remove the driveshaft and pinion nut. Be careful not to overtighten the nut during reassembly, or you will crush the spacer further.
Worn pinion bearings. If you can wiggle the pinion shaft flange up and down, the bearings are shot and the gears are likely damaged.
