Circuit Tester

A simple diagnostic tool consisting of a grounded wire probe and an internal indicator light used to quickly check if electrical power is present.

A circuit tester, commonly called a test light, is a quick tool used to diagnose electrical issues. It consists of a sharp metal probe, an internal bulb or LED indicator, and a long ground wire with an alligator clip. You connect the alligator clip to a solid metal ground point on the vehicle's frame or battery negative terminal. When you touch the probe tip to a hot electrical terminal or wire, the bulb lights up, showing that voltage is present.

Test lights are ideal for checking fuses, relay sockets, and headlight connectors. By touching the probe to the tiny metal test ports on top of a fuse, you can instantly see if power is passing through without removing the fuse. While fast and convenient, classic incandescent test lights draw current from the circuit they test. This can damage delicate computer circuits (ECUs), so a high-impedance digital test light should be used on modern computerized cars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clip the wire to a ground point. Turn the ignition key on. Touch the probe tip to the small exposed metal pads on top of the fuse. If the tester lights up on one side but not the other, the fuse is blown. If it lights up on both sides, the fuse is good.
Standard incandescent test lights draw too much amperage and can burn out delicate ECU transistors. For computer circuits, use a digital LED test light (or a multimeter), which has high resistance and draws very little current.
A dim light indicates low voltage or high resistance in the circuit. This could mean a corroded wire connection, a weak battery, or a bad ground connection.
Touch the probe tip directly to the positive battery terminal. If the light glows bright, your ground connection is solid and the tool is ready to use.
