Brake Pedal Switch

A switch mounted on the brake pedal linkage that activates the brake lights and deactivates cruise control when pressed.

The brake pedal switch, also known as the brake light switch, is a small electrical switch located under the dashboard on the brake pedal assembly. When the brake pedal is in its resting position, the pedal arm presses the switch button, keeping the circuit open. As soon as the driver presses the brake pedal, the pedal arm releases the switch button, closing the circuit.

This sends electrical power to activate the rear brake lights. In modern vehicles, the brake pedal switch also sends a signal to the engine control module to disable the cruise control system and unlock the transmission shift interlock, allowing the driver to shift out of Park.

If the switch fails, the brake lights may stay on constantly (draining the battery) or fail to turn on at all (a severe safety hazard). A failed switch can also prevent the vehicle from being shifted out of Park.
