Brake Fluid Tester
A tool that measures the moisture content of brake fluid to determine when it needs to be replaced.
A brake fluid tester is a diagnostic tool used to measure the moisture content of automotive brake fluid. Because glycol-based brake fluids (DOT 3, DOT 4, and DOT 5.1) are hygroscopic, they absorb moisture from the atmosphere through rubber hoses and the master cylinder reservoir cap over time. Excessive moisture lowers the fluid's boiling point, leading to brake fade under heavy braking.
The tester typically works by measuring the electrical conductivity of the brake fluid, which changes as moisture content increases. Most testers feature a set of LED lights that display moisture levels: green (0-1% moisture, safe), yellow (2% moisture, warning), and red (3% or more moisture, immediate replacement required). High moisture also causes internal corrosion in steel brake lines, calipers, and ABS modules.
Using a brake fluid tester during routine maintenance helps prevent dangerous pedal fade and expensive brake system repairs. If a tester shows red, a brake fluid flush is performed to replace the old, moisture-contaminated fluid with fresh fluid from a sealed container. Technicians recommend testing the fluid at least once a year or during every brake pad service.
