Ball Joint Press

A heavy C-clamp tool with various adapters used to press press-fit ball joints in and out of control arms.

A ball joint press is a specialized automotive tool designed to install and remove press-fit ball joints from suspension control arms. The tool consists of a massive steel C-frame clamp with a large threaded forcing screw, used in conjunction with various receiving cups and adapters to match different vehicle makes and models.

Because ball joints are pressed into control arms with high interference tolerances to ensure they do not come loose, they cannot be easily removed with a hammer without damaging the suspension components. The ball joint press allows a technician to apply thousands of pounds of controlled linear force directly to the joint body, pushing it out of the control arm pocket. The new joint is then pressed in using the appropriate installation adapters.

Symptoms of a bad ball joint include clicking or clunking noises over bumps, steering wander, and uneven tire wear. A failed ball joint can separate entirely, causing the wheel to fold outward and leading to a complete loss of vehicle control. Using a ball joint press is the safest and most efficient method to replace these critical safety components on the vehicle without removing the entire control arm.
