Axle Housing

The structural metal casing that encloses and protects the differential and axle shafts on solid-axle vehicles.

An axle housing is the heavy-duty metal enclosure that houses the differential gears, axle shafts, and wheel bearings on vehicles with a solid-axle suspension. Most commonly found on trucks, SUVs, and rear-wheel-drive vans, it acts as a load-bearing structural member supporting the weight of the vehicle.

The housing keeps the internal components submerged in lubricating gear oil and seals out water, dirt, and road grime. It has mounting brackets for suspension springs, shock absorbers, and control links. Axle housings are typically cast iron in the center (differential section) with steel tubes extending to the wheels.

Axle housings are highly durable but can be bent or cracked during heavy off-roading, overloading, or severe accidents. A bent housing will misalign the axles and wheels, leading to rapid tire wear, axle shaft breakage, and oil leaks. Welds and seals must be inspected for leaks or damage.
