ASE Certification
Automotive Service Excellence — a professional certification for automotive technicians, demonstrating competency in specific repair areas.
ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification is the industry-standard credential for automotive technicians in the United States. Administered by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, ASE tests validate a technician's knowledge and skill across specific repair disciplines.
ASE offers certification in over 40 individual areas organized into test series. The most common is the A-series for automobile and light truck technicians, which covers eight areas: A1 (Engine Repair), A2 (Automatic Transmission/Transaxle), A3 (Manual Drivetrain and Axles), A4 (Suspension and Steering), A5 (Brakes), A6 (Electrical/Electronic Systems), A7 (Heating and Air Conditioning), and A8 (Engine Performance). A technician who passes all eight earns the prestigious Master Technician designation.
To earn ASE certification, a technician must pass a rigorous standardized exam and demonstrate at least two years of relevant hands-on work experience (or a combination of education and experience). Certifications are valid for five years, after which technicians must retest to maintain their credentials.
For consumers, ASE certification offers assurance that a mechanic has demonstrated proven competency. ASE-certified shops typically display the blue-and-white ASE seal. While certification is voluntary, many employers require it, and it is widely recognized as the benchmark for professional automotive repair competency.
