ACamshaft Position

A typo in engine diagnostic codes referring to the 'A' Camshaft Position, which indicates the rotational location of the intake camshaft.

ACamshaft position (often a typo in scanners referring to Camshaft A) indicates the rotational timing of the intake camshaft. The engine control module uses a sensor to track this position. This sensor reads teeth on the camshaft gear to know exactly when the valves open.

This position data determines fuel injector timing and spark timing. If the camshaft is out of time with the crankshaft, the engine will run rough or misfire. A code like P0011 points to timing issues on Camshaft A.

Common causes of position errors include a stretched timing chain, a bad VVT actuator, or a failed sensor. On interference engines, a skipped timing chain can cause the valves to hit the pistons, destroying the engine.

Frequently Asked Questions

It refers to the intake camshaft, usually on Bank 1 of the engine, which controls when air enters the cylinders.
A worn timing chain, stretched belt, failed variable valve timing solenoid, or a bad sensor.
It is not recommended. If the timing is off, the engine can misfire, and in interference engines, a skipped timing chain can cause the valves to hit the pistons.
