The A/C Schroeder valve (more commonly spelled Schrader) acts like a tire valve stem. Located inside the metal high and low-pressure service ports, it features a spring-loaded center pin. When you press the pin, the valve opens; release it, and the internal rubber seal snaps shut. This allows mechanics to connect manifold hoses or charge couplers without venting pressurized refrigerant into the shop.
These valves are common leak points. The internal rubber seal dries out from engine heat, letting refrigerant slowly seep out. You should always keep the plastic service port caps screwed on tight. The caps contain a rubber seal that acts as a backup blocker if the Schrader valve begins to drip.
