A/C Receiver-Drier
A canister in A/C systems using an expansion valve that filters refrigerant, separates gas from liquid, and absorbs internal moisture.
An A/C receiver-drier is a small metal canister installed on the high-pressure side of an air conditioning system, located between the condenser and the expansion valve. It is used in A/C systems that utilize a thermal expansion valve for refrigerant metering.
The receiver-drier serves three essential functions: it acts as a temporary storage receiver for liquid refrigerant exiting the condenser, ensuring a steady stream of liquid reaches the expansion valve. It contains an internal filter to trap metal debris and contaminants. Finally, it contains a desiccant bag (a moisture-absorbing material) to extract tiny amounts of water from the refrigerant.
Moisture is the worst enemy of an A/C system; it can combine with refrigerant and oil to form highly corrosive acids that destroy metal lines and compressor seals. Moisture can also freeze inside the expansion valve, blocking refrigerant flow. Over time, the desiccant inside the receiver-drier becomes saturated and loses its effectiveness, or the filter gets clogged with debris from a wearing compressor.
A receiver-drier cannot be cleaned and must be replaced whenever the A/C system is opened for repairs (such as replacing a compressor or hose) to ensure all moisture is removed from the system. Leaving an old receiver-drier in place voids the warranty on new A/C components.
