A/C Line Disconnect Tool

A small plastic or metal collar tool that slides into spring-lock couplings to release the internal retaining spring, letting the lines separate.

Automotive manufacturers use spring-lock couplers to connect A/C lines quickly during assembly. These connections have a garter spring inside a flared housing that grabs a ridge on the male pipe. To pull them apart, you need a disconnect tool. The tool is a split plastic collar that wraps around the line. You push the collar inside the coupling, which spreads the internal garter spring wide enough to slide the male line out.

Trying to pry these couplers open with screwdrivers will bend the aluminum lines and scratch the sealing surface. This guarantees a refrigerant leak when reassembled. Clean any road grit out of the coupling before inserting the tool. If dirt blocks the spring from expanding, the tool will crack.

Frequently Asked Questions

They are sized by the pipe diameter. The standard sizes are 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, and 3/4-inch, matching different liquid and suction refrigerant lines.
Yes. Many vehicles use the same spring-lock coupling design for high-pressure fuel lines and transmission cooler lines.
Always replace the internal green HNBR O-rings and the garter spring if it is rusted. Coat the new seals with fresh compressor oil before snapping the line back together.
