A/C Compressor Shaft Seal

A rubber and metal seal at the front of the A/C compressor shaft that prevents refrigerant and oil from leaking out.

The compressor shaft seal sits behind the compressor pulley and clutch assembly. It seals the rotating shaft where it exits the compressor housing. This seal prevents high-pressure refrigerant gas and PAG oil from escaping into the engine bay while keeping dirt out.

This seal is a common source of slow leaks because it experiences constant friction and heat cycles. If you don't run your A/C for months, the seal will dry out and start to leak. Mechanics use ultraviolet dye or electronic leak detectors behind the clutch plate to locate these leaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

You will see a ring of green UV dye or oily dust sprayed onto the underside of the hood directly above the compressor pulley.
Replacing the seal requires discharging the system, removing the clutch and pulley, and using a specialized seal remover sleeve tool to pull and seat the new seal.
The seal relies on oil suspended in the refrigerant to stay lubricated. Sitting idle allows the oil to drain away, causing the rubber seal to dry out, harden, and crack.
