ABS Control Module

The electronic control unit of the anti-lock braking system that processes wheel speed data to prevent wheel lockup during hard braking.

The ABS control module is the electronic brain of the anti-lock braking system. It continuously processes signals from wheel speed sensors mounted at each wheel. If the module detects that a wheel is about to lock up (stop spinning) during braking—which would cause the vehicle to skid and lose steering control—it commands hydraulic valves inside the ABS modulator to rapidly pulse the brake pressure to that wheel (up to 15 times per second).

This allows the tire to maintain traction and enables the driver to steer around obstacles. When the ABS module fails due to internal electrical shorts or solder joint fractures, it illuminates the ABS and traction control warning lights, disabling the anti-lock assist but leaving standard hydraulic brakes functional.

Replacing a failed module requires specialized diagnostic scanners and, in many cases, programming to match the vehicle's VIN and configuration.
