A C System Recharge

The process of evacuating moisture and adding the correct weight of refrigerant and oil to a vehicle's air conditioning system.

An A/C system recharge restores cooling performance by replenishing lost refrigerant. Over time, refrigerant gas can slowly seep through rubber hoses and seals. During a professional recharge, a technician uses a manifold gauge set and vacuum pump to evac the system. This vacuum boils off any moisture inside. The technician then weighs in the exact amount of refrigerant specified on the underhood label.

Frequently Asked Questions

A properly sealed system should never need recharging. If your A/C is blowing warm, it means there is a leak that must be fixed before adding new refrigerant.
It is not recommended. These cans only measure low-side pressure, which makes it easy to overcharge the system. They also often contain leak sealants that clog professional recovery machines.
R134a is the standard refrigerant used in cars built between 1994 and 2016. R1234yf is a newer, environmentally friendly refrigerant used in modern vehicles. They cannot be mixed.
