A/C Inner Plate

The metal backing plate inside the A/C compressor clutch assembly that meshes with the pulley.

The A/C inner plate is the clutch hub. It is splined to the compressor shaft. When the clutch coil is energized, it pulls this plate into contact with the spinning pulley. Friction locks them together, turning the compressor. When the A/C is off, the plate is pushed back by spring steel tabs, letting the pulley spin freely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rust on the friction surfaces, a wide clutch gap, or a failing electromagnetic coil that lacks the power to hold it.
The leaf springs holding the plate can weaken and break, causing the plate to wobble and click against the pulley.
Yes, it is held in place by a single center nut. You can swap the clutch plate without discharging the refrigerant.
