A C Compressor

The pump in the vehicle's air conditioning system that compresses and circulates refrigerant gas.

The A/C compressor is the core of the air conditioning system. Driven by the engine accessory belt, it draws in low-pressure refrigerant gas from the cabin evaporator. It compresses the gas into a high-pressure, high-temperature vapor. This pressurized refrigerant then flows to the condenser to release heat. Without the compressor, refrigerant cannot circulate, rendering the system inoperative.

Frequently Asked Questions

A loud squealing or rattling noise when the A/C is turned on, warm air blowing from the vents, or a visible refrigerant leak around the compressor body.
No. The compressor is the pump that drives the entire refrigeration cycle. Without it, the system cannot function.
